Class 6-9 We Love Reading: తెలుగు కథ : గ్రద్ద పిల్లి
ఒక నది ఒడ్డున ఒక పెద్ద మర్రిచెట్టు ఉన్నది. దానిమీద ఎన్నో పక్షులు నివశిస్తున్నాయి. అదే చెట్టు తొర్రలో ఒక గుడ్డిగద్ద జీవిస్తున్నది. గుడ్డితనానికి తోడు ముసలితనం తోడై ఆహారం తెచ్చుకోడానికి కూడా చేత కాక అవస్థపడుచున్నది.
దానిని చూచి పక్షులు జాలిపడి తాము సంపాదించిన ఆహారంలో కొంత దానికి పెట్టేవి. అందుకుగాను ఆ చెట్టుపైనున్న పక్షిపిల్లలను కాపాడుతూ గ్రద్ద కాలం గడుపుచున్నది. ఇలా ఉండగా ఒకనాడు పక్షులన్నీ ఆహారం కోసం వెళ్ళడం చూచి జిత్తులమారి పిల్లి పక్షి పిల్లలని తినాలని ఆ చెట్టు ఎక్కింది.
పిల్లిని చూచి భయపడి పక్షిపిల్లలు అరవసాగినవి. శత్రువెవడో వచ్చాడని గ్రహించి గ్రద్ద "ఓరీ ఎవరు నువ్వు? ఇక్కడికి ఎందుకు వచ్చావు?" అని గద్దించింది. "నేను పిల్లిని" అని చెప్పగా వినిన గ్రద్ద "నువ్వా! వెంటనే ఇక్కడి నుండి వెళ్లిపొమ్ము, పోకపోతే నీ ప్రాణాలు నీకు దక్కవు, పోతావా? లేదా? అని కోపంగా గద్దించింది.
గ్రద్ద మాటలకు పిల్లి అయ్యా! నేను ఎంత పాపం చేసి ఈ పిల్లి జన్మనెత్తితిని. కొంత కాలంగా నాకు జ్ఞానము కలిగి మాంసము తినడంలేదు. ధర్మ మార్గము తెలుసుకోడానికి మీ వద్దకు వచ్చానుని కాని, వేరొక దురాలోచన నాకు లేదు. కాబట్టి దయ ఉంచి నన్ను శిష్యునిగా స్వీకరించండి" అని గ్రద్దతో పలికింది. పిల్లి వినయంగా పలికిన మాటలకు గ్రద్ద సంతోషించి, పిల్లిని తన శిష్యునిగా అంగీకరించింది.
ఆనాటి నుండి ప్రతిరోజూ పక్షులు లేనిసమయంలో ఆ చెట్టుపై గ్రద్ద పిల్లి కాలక్షేపం చేయసాగాయి. కొన్నిరోజులు అలానే నమ్మకం కలిగించి పిల్లి తెలివిగా చెట్టుమీదుకు పాకి గూళ్ళలోని పక్షిపిల్లలని తిని, ఆ ఈకలను, ఎముకలను గ్రద్ద నివశించుచున్న చెట్టు తొర్రలో పడవేసింది. గ్రుడ్డి గ్రద్దకు ఈ విషయమేమి తెలియదు.
క్రమంగా పక్షులకు తమ పిల్లలను ఏదే తినేస్తున్నదనే అనుమానం కలిగింది. వెంటనే గ్రద్దను అడిగాయి. అది తనకేమీ తెలియదని అన్నది. కాని దాని తొర్రలో ఉన్న ఈకలను, ఎముకలను చూచి "ఈ పాడు గ్రద్ద మనమిచ్చే ఆహారం చాలక మనం లేని సమయం చూచి మన పిల్లలని పొట్టనబెట్టుకొన్న"దని భావించి, పక్షులన్నీ కలిసి గ్రద్దను పొడిచి చంపేశాయి.
కాబట్టి కొత్తగా వచ్చిన వారిని నమ్మి దగ్గరకు చేరనీయరాదు"

Once upon a time, there was a big banyan tree by the river, and many birds made their homes on its branches. Inside the trunk of the same tree lived a blind old eagle, struggling to find food. The birds would often share some of their food with the blind eagle, which protected their baby birds.
One day, when all the birds went out in search of food, a cunning cat climbed the tree with the intention of eating the baby birds. The baby birds screamed, and the eagle stopped the cat, asking why it had come.
The cat asked to be accepted as a disciple. Touched by the cat's words, the eagle agreed and accepted the cat as its disciple.
From that day on, the eagle-cat would visit the tree when there were no birds around. After a few days, the cat cleverly climbed the tree, ate the young birds, and dropped feathers and bones in the tree trunk where the blind eagle resided. Unaware of the cat's actions, the blind eagle didn't suspect anything.
Gradually, the birds became suspicious and questioned the eagle. [This story is copied from apteachers.in website] The birds found feathers and bones in the eagle nest. They thought the eagle had killed their young ones out of hunger. In anger, the birds killed the innocent eagle.
The moral of the story is to not always trust newcomers.
